Meet | Coach Santiago
I grew up in the Bronx, NY where I was fortunate to be exposed to the sport of Squash. It was a sport that I had never heard or even had the slightest idea about. My coach and mentor Tim Wyant visited my classroom when I was in 6th grade and talked about the opportunity to play the sport. My teachers encouraged me to give squash a chance and I am thankful that I listened and took their advice.
Before joining my Urban Squash program in Middle School I was a C/C- student. However, thanks to the program and all the hard work that I put in I was able to increase my GPA to a B+. At the same time Squash taught me discipline and provided me with the right guidance to earn acceptance into Avon Old Farms, a private boarding school in Avon, CT. CitySquash, my urban squash program, continued to work with me even when I was away in another state. They continued to provide me with mentoring, academic guidance, and squash opportunities that went from playing tournaments to providing me with the necessary equipment to play the sport.
Boarding school was challenging but with hard work and perseverance I was able to graduate and continue my squash career at Connecticut College, a private college. Again the program continued to monitor and support me all 4 years and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for all the resources, discipline, and proper guidance that were offered to me thanks to urban squash.
