Over the past two weekends we had 12 of our scholars attend 2 back-to-back Lifetime tournaments here in Houston. We are proud to say that 7 of our 11 scholars were involved in the finals for 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 5.0. Rodrigo Chon Him reached the final twice in the 5.0 division and won one division without dropping a single game in the finals! Rodrigo continues to excel and has become a well-respected member of the Houston Squash community.
Karina and Miranda both reached the finals in the 3.0 division and made two more champions of Mission Squash participants. Miranda Medina has excelled this year: She won the 3.0 and 3.5 divisions over the course of two weeks.
Austin Herbert returned to the competitive side of the sport and won the consolation prize in the 3.0. The highlight of the last two weeks was the last Lifetime tournament where Joe Rojas played his heart out, capturing his first squash tournament crown. We know Joe will use this as a motivation to continue pushing himself to capture more titles in his final years as a Junior Squash player.
Special recognition to Ruby Sandoval, Nathan Martinez, and Mariano Serrano for making it to the semifinals of their division. Tyler Hernandez played in the top division of 5.5 and continues working toward capturing the 5.5 trophy soon.
We are also very proud of our first time players Edgar Estrada, Amy Luna, and Elena Hernandez. They are the future of the program and have gained valuable experience that will help them eventually fill their older teammates’ shoes.
Special thanks to Alejandro Reyes for his volunteer work with the scholars. We look forward to seeing him break into the 50 in the world very soon.
